EXPERTISE
RIZZO staff has worked on sites throughout the US, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Sub-Sahara. Many subsurface conditions have been encountered, most notably liquefiable soils, subsidence and karst conditions, deep clay sites subject to excessive settlement, expansive soils and shales, and collapsing soils. We have worked in various environmental conditions, including glacial deposits, residual soils, marine deposits, windblown sands and loess, hydraulic fills, and offshore sediments, as well as rock cuts and excavations, landslides, colluvial soils and alluvial soils.
GLOBAL TUNNELING - RIZZO’s tunneling experience includes significant projects from around the world. In the Middle East, RIZZO engineers have created the conceptual design for a 29-ft diameter, concrete-lined tunnel that will extend 9km offshore. Once in service, this tunnel will supply cooling water for several power stations totaling approximately 5000 MW. In Paris, RIZZO investigated, reviewed the design, and managed the construction of a segment of the Paris Metro, which runs adjacent to the Grande Palais, Petite Palais, and Le Pont Alexandre III. In Madagascar, RIZZO has been involved in an effort to develop sustainable hydroelectric projects. In conjunction with this effort, RIZZO engineers have designed a large-diameter tunnel to transport water from the Ivondro River through rock strata to a hydroelectric powerhouse.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
MINING PROJECTS - GUALCAMAYO TUNNEL
In Argentina, our engineers have designed several tunnels, shafts, and a subterranean chamber for the Gualcamayo Mine, one of Yamana Gold Incorporated’s most prolific developments. These tunnels are used for access to a subterranean chamber where crushing operations are completed. The shotcrete-lined tunnels and interior chamber are reinforced with anchoring and steel ribs.
VEHICULAR PROJECTS - AGUA NEGRA TUNNEL
RIZZO was contracted by the San Juan Department of Transportation to provide geotechnical, geophysical, and hydrogeological studies for the Agua Negra Tunnel. When completed, the 14-kilometer long tunnel will provide an important link for vehicular traffic traveling through the Andes Mountains between Argentina and Chile. In order to adequately study the subsurface characteristics, deep borings are being advanced at high altitudes (between 4,300 and 4,900 MASL), and under sometimes adverse weather conditions.
WATER CONVEYANCE PROJECTS - SWINGING BRIDGE DAM
At Swinging Bridge Dam in Sullivan County, New York, RIZZO engineers performed settlement and buckling analyses of a 10-foot diameter steel-lined penstock and a 9-foot square access tunnel. RIZZO engineers were retained to develop a grouting program to reduce the stresses on the penstock and access tunnel and to perform follow-up inspections on repairs made to the tunnel liners.
TAUM SAUK UPPER RESERVOIR REBUILD
At Taum Sauk Dam in Reynolds County Missouri, RIZZO personnel inspected and made repairs to two tunnels. Reinforcements were designed for a 4,765-foot long, 25-foot diameter horizontal rock tunnel while an 18.5-foot diameter steel-lined tunnel/penstock was relined.
MASS TRANSIT PROJECTS - SECOND AVENUE SUBWAY TUNNEL
In New York City, RIZZO engineers performed geotechnical studies related to the design of the Second Avenue Subway Tunnel. The scope included rock mechanics studies, groundwater exploration and monitoring, and consulting related to the selection of a tunnel boring machine.
THE NORTH SHORE CONNECTOR PROJECT
As part of our involvement with the North Shore Connector Project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, RIZZO personnel monitored the existing facilities, provided instrumentation installation oversight, and conducted pre-and post-construction inspection. When completed the twin-bored tunnels, each 1.2 miles long, will carry light-rail transit beneath the Allegheny River.
BART SEISMIC RETROFIT PROGRAM
RIZZO was contracted by the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) for the BART Seismic Retrofit Program. RIZZO personnel developed new seismic design criteria and performed seismic vulnerability assessments and seismic retrofit studies for the Transbay Tube, the San Francisco and Oakland Ventilation Towers, and various underground structures of the BART System.
MUNI METRO TURNAROUND PROJECT
RIZZO provided consultation on the development of seismic design criteria and seismic analysis for the MUNI Metro Turnaround Project in San Francisco, California. This project involved construction of an 840-foot section of twin-bored soft-ground tunnels. These tunnels were constructed in difficult soil conditions under San Francisco’s commercial center.
TAIWAN HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT
RIZZO performed expert seismic evaluation for the Taiwan High-Speed Rail Project which included seismic ground motion analyses and the development of seismic design criteria for tunnels, aerial structures, bridges, and station structures.
